Tim Bray contemplates Unswitching from Apple
Tim Bray ponders switching away from Apple equipment. His major gripe is with Apple's secrecy policies, but he also weighs the technical pros and cons of Unswitching that he would be likely to encounter.
For now, I'm still planning to buy an Apple Powerbook for my next notebook computer, but Apple's secrecy and legal policies have caused some serious cognitive dissonance for me.

Can I ask an honest question here? So what Apple is a bit secretive. They don't give you 'release' dates. Every piece of hardware (computer) they have is generally on a six month upgrade cycle. If not six months, who cares, you know after six months it is probably best to wait for a newer version.
Has Microsoft ONCE told us a RELIABLE date for ANY product? Have they EVER been on time? Have they not purchased up companies, sued people, purchased media companies to use to solicit themselves?
Has Dell, Compaq or AlienWare EVER released a date, a schedule or a notification of upcomming hardware? Hasn't Dell re-branded Lexmark printers as their own, but made them incompatiable with Lexmark drivers thus making you use THEIR drivers with less functionality?
So what Apple sues anybody who infringes on their ideas, patents or concepts. If you made a superior product but had a MARGIN of the market share and had just recently dug yourself out of the red, you'd be over protective too. Let's not forget that Apple being a little sue happy here and there makes sure that Apple's software, hardware and what not is the best it can be (to the most part) when it comes to market and has the most market impact. From a marketing standpoint; early knowledge of PowerBook release dates can just make it so Dell can smash them by releasing a new machine or majorly price cutting a machine two days before. They're the under-dog, it's required to do everything they can to fight for the top.
